Not sure about the bad design part. Don't understand what you mean. That trim and tilt assembly is used on many models.

A ten millimeter socket should fit right over the head of the bolt. The same as the other bolts.

Usually the trim / tilt unit is removed as an assembly in order to replace the motor.----Done on the work bench.

Thanks for reply i was told to take out the trim unit mounting bolts and try to pull the unit foward to get access to that rear trim motor bolt . I will try over weekend with a flex extension if that does not work i will remove the unit - thanks again for the advice .

My comments were related to removing the pump motor with the assembly being on a work bench.

Some times what seems to be the long way around is the shorter path.

If you can tie off the motor in the up position, unhook the top of the ram from under the power head (can’t remember if it’s held in with a drift pin or c ring) loosen the manual screw (on the trim unit) to manually push the ram down, then you can tilt the trim motor back a bit more to reach the back bolts with a extension & universal. Otherwise you need to hang the motor on a cherry picker, unbolt the motor and swing away from the boat to take the entire trim assembly out towards the boat, swap out the motor on the bench and reassemble.
if you don’t remove the engine from the boat and are able to remove the rear trim motor bolts, use a mechanical pick up tool to grab the heads of the bolts to re install so you can be gentle and not chance cross treading those back bolts on reassemble.

Removing the entire unit, with the motor off the boat is a preferred method as the other posts have suggested. It can be done as I suggested without removing the engine but may not safe enough time to make it worth it. if you have access to a cherry picker or chain block to lift of the motor you can avoid the chance of cross threading the rear trim motor bolts on re assembly (cast aluminum strips easy)

Tilt the motor fully up. Use the tilt lock to hold it in place.

Remove the tilt piston attach pin. Retract the tilt piston. Trim pistons also if desired.

Remove the wiring from the T/T relay and snake it out of the motor.

Remove the lower mounting bolts. Remove any bonding wires.

Slide the trim/tilt assembly out from between the clamp brackets.

Take the assembly to the work bench.
