Ok, I have the shop manual. I have removed the 4 main bolts and the shift linkage is uncoupled. I stil can not remove the lower unit. I think this may be the first time this has been done on this engine.

Any suggestions? The shop manual says to use heat on the lower unit or bolts. Won't this trash the paint? I suppose I can always repaint.

Thansk,

Re: 1995 Yamaha 9.9 Lower Unit Removal

Dont know your specific motor but there is a general rule that I go by, if it wont move then I have missed a bolt or nut. Manufacturers have a habit of hiding a bolt or nut under a flange or under a trim tab or under a water intake screen.
You say that you have removed the bolts. Very often it is nuts that have been removed and the studs are still there. If that is the case then corosion around the studs will prevent the lower from moving. Heat will have to be applied to break the corosion. It is more often the case when the motor has been used in salt water.
Often the lower hangs up on the water pump tube. A few carefull smacks with a soft faced mallet on the sides of the rounded portion of the lower will do the trick.
The last thing is if the drive shaft is siezed in the crankshaft splines. This may present a bigger problem.
