Ran no oil about 6 miles. On advice posted, I opened up the lower unit, and found the pinion gear burned and pitted.Everything else looks like new,I mean not a mark on the forward and reverse gear,I'm very surprised. I'm wondering if I can just install a new pinion gear,or will it require re-shimming?Any help on the procedure would be greatly appreciated. My manual doesn't get into it.At this point I have the reverse gear out and I'm not sure how to get the prop shaft out (don't want to mess up the shifter assy).Or should this job be best left to a shop?<br />Thanks a bunch............Dirk

I have a 90hp 1996. Yes you should replace forward with pinion. also get a rude repare book.We use omc repare catalogs at the marina if needed, and they go in to great detail, yes you can do it yourself.
