I did a bad thing, turned off the battery switch before turning off the motor. Now the tach shows 4000rpm. I remember reading that this frys some resistors. Do I need to replace the stator or regulator/rectifier? And it's been running so good, darn.

well your motor will still run fine( at least mine did) even though the rectifier-regulator is burned. But your tach wont work and your wont be charging your battery( not that it is SUCH A GREAT charger in the first place!!)

I hear ya, that 10amp stator just doesn't keep up, especially when the livewell is running.

Thanks for the info guys, working right now but I'll try to test this weekend.

Any problems running with a busted tach while I wait for a new one? I'm not worried about exceeding WOT and the engine/oil overheat seem to be working on the tach. Put in the new voltage regulator and it didn't fix the problem, ouch, that's what I get for troubleshooting with parts, guess I've got a spare now.

I wouldn't worry about the tach if you have the correct prop on the boat the chances of over revving the engine is slim to none unless you break something and then the tach won't really help as you will hear it before you see it. Plus the ignition system will only let the engine rev to 6200 before shutting the party down anyways so you can't really hurt outboard. The more important thing is the engine alarms if you have an issue they will alert you before you seriously damage the engine.
