hey guys i have a question. i have my 1987 cajun bass boat 18ft that i just bought and its at a mechanics right now and i have a mercury 150 on there and was having trouble getting up on plane it was like i wasnt getting enough rpms to get on plane so i took it in to see what was going on and my compression was bad and he looked at it and told me who ever put the pistons in had them back wards starbord and port mixed around and that was the main problem so i had already orderd new pistions n all and he installed them and we took it to the lake and still the power wasnt there, checked every thing when we got back the compression was good the carbs i have on there are brand new and are tuned so he started to do soem research and told me that the the previous owner had done some weird stuff and had linked up a 1979 135 hp power head and a 175hp mid somethin.. i dont recal what he had said and told me that with the different gearing that there was no way i would be able toget on plane because it turns out that with the different gearing it come out to be 108hp and with the 200 carbs i had on the motor it was getting to much gas and it was all miss configured..... i know this all may be confusing but im just putting it out there tellin u whats been goin on with my original motor anyways he told me that with a good chunk of money he could get every thing right but told me what else i could do is if i swaped him motors plus with the repairs i have paid for and additinal 600 he would give me a 1996 125 force out board with 30hrs on it with trim tilt and every thing. it sound a little weird to me. what do u guys think? and what do u guys think of the motor?

sorry for it being so long but im at a road block and dont know which way to go? i appreciate any and all feed back

Thanks, Josh.R

Re: 1996 125 force outboard

Welcome to iboats Josh.

Sounds like you have had quite an experience.

With the info given, hard to tell if you should trust that mechanic or not. Some things just don't sound right at all.

Don't know what to tell you except that he does not have a 1996 125 hp Force to sell you.
They never made one.

The last year for the 125 hp was 1989.

Would I pay for a bunch of parts he replaced because he didn't know what he was doing, probably not. He's the expert and led you down a golden parts path.

Would I trust him to work on my motor, no.

Would I throw more money to him, no way.

Would I put a "mystery" 125 19xxx motor on my boat, no.
Would I repower with a Force, no.

I agree with roscoe as far as not paying for the mechanic's experimenting with your money to see if that part or this part fixes something, especially when he's the one telling you what parts are needed next.If it's a 1996 force ,it might be a 120 hp, but in my opinion I think I would stay away from him,as he sounds like a parts replacer instead of a mechanic. As far as the force motor ,if it's had regular service and comes with a warranty of some sort they're no different from any other motor ,and generally easier to work on, but like any motor, if it's been abused or neglected stay away from it,and definitely stay away from him. This is my two cents worth, keep us posted on what you end up doing .

Quite a convoluted story! I totally agree with the other two. At this point, cut your losses and stop dealing with this guy. Something just doesn't sound right--something is rotten in Denmark (fishy). His explanation for horsepower change due to gearing -- well--- calling it BS would be polite. Yeah, gearing can affect ultimate horsepower output, but with your size engine, it should not keep the boat from planing. He really sounds like he doesn't know his A** from a hole in the ground! (If your version is correct)
