Hello,

I am acting on some advice I received in this forum regarding servicing the recirculation system on my outboard. I checked out a Clymer service manual which makes note of this system, but for some reason it was missed in the referenced chapter.

Could some one please outline the steps I should take in this operation? Diagrams and sketches would be helpful aswell (email: r_racine@hotmail.com).

Thanks in advance!

Remove the recirc valves and check the screens for carbon. To test, affix a piece of clear vinyl tubing to a syringe and fill 1/2 way with isopropyl alcohol.

Attach the tube to the nipple on the valve. Pull plunger on syringe out and look for air bubbles entering the tube/syringe. If air enters, the valve tests ok.

Also should blow out the recirc. lines that lead to the cylinders to make sure they're clear.

The above info is from my manual as best as I remember. I went through the tests last year.

Thanks for the tip alden135. Where are the recir valves exactly? Do I have to remove the carbs to get to them? Are the hoses easily accessible as well?

Recirculation valves must allow flow in only one direction; as alden135 said, that is through the screen and out the nipple. If pushing the syringe allows flow into the nipple, and carb cleaner will not correct the problem. replace the fitting.

The fittings at the piston ends of the hoses must also be tested and cleaned.

The service manuals state that it is not necessary to actually remove the recirculation check valves unless the first test indicates a problem.

Do not pull the hoses from the check valves. Use a tool to push them from he fitting.

Follow the tiny hoses back from the cylinders and you'll see them. On my 1990 120 I had to loosen the VRO to get at one of them.
