G'Day My 175 ocean runner was running for about 20 mins then stopped. Now starts intermitently 20 to 30 secs and then stops. Now will not start at all. Suspected fuel at first. All fuel systems OK, fully checked. checked for water in fuel. Drained carby bowls. changed filter. cleaned and reset plugs etc. Now find I have no spark at all.
Where do I go now, without going out and buying a new or second hand power pack, What can I check?

Is your ignition kill lanyard in working order. I have the same problem with my 90 hp motor, I just followed the steps in the manual for troble shoting that problem , and found that my power pack has no output on the coil side, Anyway, i would start at beginning and work your way through. Good luck.

On the ignition switch there is a button for the lanyard clip to go on.Move that button in and out by pressing it(quickly),ie:press in and let go so it snaps out. Also, look under the flywheel on the motor and notice any black goo oozing from the stator. If you see drippings coming from the stator it could be failing.Good luck.

Re: 1996 175 hp ocean runner no spark

G'Day, Thanks for the advice guys. No, there is no kill lanyard point on my motor control. I put a new, after market, CDI unit and optical sensor on the engine this did not seem to cure the problem. However I did find in the control/ ignition box, there was a burnt out wire, adjacent to the audible alarm This was making intermitent short to earth and therefore no power back to the motor. I have replaced the alarm which was part melted with an alarm from the local elctronics shop and this I have located under the dash, (I was not prepared to pay $A105 for a genuine one when this cost $A9.95) and problem is now solved

G'day Aussie Les, I'm having the same problem up here in sunny Brissie, must be something about the water over here! I'll look out for damaged wires to save on the cost of new ignition packs etc.

G'Day, Just for future reference for everyone else from a sunburnt country. The after market ignition pack was from Moby marine in Sydney, made in the US, and priced around $300

A quick way to check for wiring problems in a no-spark condition is to remove the port side electrical connecter on the pack. Then crank the motor over and look for spark. Removing the connector bypasses the boat and engine wiring that may affect the ignition system. If there is still no spark, there are only 3 items left, pack, OIS sensor, and the stator.

Hi Lark, I'm from Forest Lake, southside of Brisbane usually put in at either Victoria Point or Rudy Maas depending on where we're going. Where are you?

I'm up at Lawnton, near strathpine, got a ramp just down the road that is on the Pine river, which opens onto the bay at redcliff.

By the way my fault was with the shift interruptor switch - just shows, lots of similar problems with different causes. Thank God for the experts who know where to look!

You may have to pull the top covers for flywheel access to remove it. Inspect the stator for melting insulation around the black "coils" on the stator frame, especially the forward one which is the power coil that engergizes the sensor and pack.

A bad stator can check OK for resistance yet on inspection, it is half melted away and needs replacement.

Re: 1996 175 hp ocean runner no spark

G'Day guys, I am still having trouble with my engine. It was running very well for about 2 hours then started to miss and then died. I now find that when I try to start it there is a spark at the plugs for about 5 -6 seconds then nothing. Turn off the ignition turn it over again, sparks for 5-6 seconds then nothing. With the plugs dry and clean it fires but before you can pick up revs it dies then of course when you continue to wind it over it simply floods. Where do I go from here ? I see there is a starting advance system that operates for 5 seconds I presume this is linked to my problem. Les

G'Day Guys, A check on the power coil wires from the stator, orange & orange/black wires, showed only 6 volts when cranking and only 55 ohms resistance. I think this is telling me something. Les
