Diagnosing some issues Im having with this motor and Im working on sorting out the Carb/timing/throttle and I have a question regarding the carb butterfly.

Right now I have it idling OK, but the linkages are all out of whack and I need to know where the butterfly should be sitting to move forward with this.

Right now it is about 1/16 to 1/8" open at idle.

Is this correct or should it be idling OK with the butterfly fully closed?

If I close it all the way it dies.

It has to be CLOSED at idle.------Look at adjusting that stop on that thin rod that goes to the back.----Any other trouble shooting done ??

Yeah, found and replaced two bad plug wires and swapped the coils due to a loss of spark in one cyl intermittently, plugs are new.

After replacing the coils/wires it runs better, but someone has been in here a few times. I suspect this was a rental at one time and I know it was last owned by two college kids so things are all miss adjusted.

Im mainly wondering if I should start with a carb rebuild (Yeah, I now know the answer) or work out the other issues first.

Is there some kind of guide I can follow to make the initial settings for timing, idle and carb linkage?

Im good with these sort of things but a step by step would save me a lot of time.
