I have a slow (drip, drip, drip) leak coming from the elbow that feeds into the exhaust manifold. I thought I had a bad drain plug, but after changing it out, I can see that the leak is coming from the elbow itself. My Clymers manual does not have instructions on how that fitting is attached to the manifold. Can I remove the elbow without pulling the manifold?

i would suggest getting rid of that clymers manual and go to the sticky section at the top of the forum and downloading the correct manual for your motor and it will give you all the info you will need.

It is my experience that you can just remove the bolts that hold the elbow on and then it should just come off. I just got done doing mine on a merc 898 and didnt have to remove the manifold.

But get the manual for your motor and stern drive and you will have all the info you will need.

Thanks. Downloaded the manual and the diagrams are much better, but still does not show how the inlet elbow is attached to the manifold. The boat is in the storage yard right now and I don't remember seeing any attachment bolts that you noted. It looked to me like it was pressed or threaded in, but I'm relying on memory at this point and that's never a good idea :)

It should be a standard pipe fitting elbow that is threaded in. You may need to hit it with some thread loosening penetrating oil and let it soak in if you think it may be stuck.

Picked up the part and see the pipe threads. Thanks all.

This should have been an easy job, but much to my chagrin, the stock elbow is plastic and I crushed it. Now I need to pick up a tap to remove the piece stuck in the threads. I'm still determined to do this without removing the manifold...
