1996 40 hp elpto won't idle

Hi,

I bought a 1996 40 hp elpto 2 stroke mercury one month ago, I found the motor didn't idle when I put the fast idle level down yesterday, so I can't change the gear to forward, when I start it, I lift the fast idle up, push and turn the key, it looks fine, I can see the smoke, but if I put down the fast idle down, the motor stop.

What's the problem?

Is the fuel fresh? Try running some Sea Foam thru it.

One more thing, if I didn't lift up the fast idle lever, the motor won't start.
