How long is a while?

Does the Internet mean the end to proper punctuation and capitalization? Your post is hard to follow. There are keys on your keyboard for those functions. Sorry to pick on you, but I seem to be seeing it more and more. You're posting on a Forum, not chatting in a chatroom. Try this...

My motor will turn over good, has new spark plugs, but has been sitting for awhile. Any sugestions on getting it started or checking to see if it is firing?

If it's been sitting a long time and the gas in the carbs has gone stale, you might need to rebuild them. Also, check your lanyard kill switch.

1996 Mercury oil injected, I got it started, but
it smokes. Is that normal after it has been sitting for about a year?

My 40hp smokes quite a bit when first started. Are your running this on muffs, or in the lake?

Make sure you are using new gas, and that the motor is getting oil.

If the motor was properly winterized last year, it would have had gas stabilizer added, and the cylinders fogged. Upon first start-up those two combinations are guaranteed to smoke for a while.

Don't forget to watch out for the telltale water spout out the back. No flow = no cooling.
