While on the water my engine was well cooled...I started it up and it would hardly run.I throttled up and it had no power. It bogged down and wouldn't get past 2500 rpms. It sounded like it was hiting on 1 or 2 cylinders. I pulled the plugs and 2 were not fireing. I changed them at home and the motor ran fine. Back in the water it did the same thing..bogged. Out of the water it runs fine. I ran it at least 30 minutes idleing and reving. It runs great. Why does it lose power in the water?
Help! J.C.

WoodDuck..... Many boaters think their engines are running fine out of the water, but will not when in the water.

The fact is that the engine IS NOT running properly in either case. It may seem that way due to the fact that out of the water, there is no exhaust back pressure..... the engine can free wheel so to speak.

Regardless of the engines performance, it is definitely not a good idea to rev the engine to a high rpm when on a flushette. The engine could encounter a runaway condition (scream away) and before one had a chance to correct that condition, connecting rods would be flying through the side of the crankcase.

Bottom line.... trouble shoot the engine. Check the compression, should be 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. With the s/plugs removed, check the spark, should jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue flame.

If the above checks out okay, I'd suspect that you have clogged/fouled carbs which would cause the engine to run lean. Let us know what you find.
