I would like to get some opinions on this motor on reliability, performance or any problems associated with year.I am in the need of an outboard since mine went south last sept and was looking into upgrading to a 70-75hp.I found what i think is a good deal for boat/new trailer &motor.since it is 4-5hrs away i would like to your thoughts before driving that far.I`m told it has low hrs min use and previously owned by elderly gentleman.Has run saltwater and i`m gonna use in freshwater-any concerns i need to hear?Has`nt been in water 2yrs but is started a few times during the year.I was asked @ what rpm it runs(5k or 5500) and they could not tell me-was his grandfathers boat.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

That far away would make me nervous too. I have a 95 60 HP. They upgraded (or changed) the control box between 95 and 96. My 95 is a great motor.

I'd sure want to perform a compression test. All cylinders should be w/in 10% of each other. Certainly more experienced repair folks in these forums, but I'd say over about 100 PSI (my 60HP is at ~125 per cylinder) indicates an engine with considerable life left in her. You might want to turn a few bolts on the lower unit to make sure they aren't corroded on. I'd also remove the prop to make sure it isn't stuck. An in-water test is obviously a good idea if possible (motor can run "great" on the muffs, but poorly under load). I would figure the cost of rebuilding the carbs, replacing the impeller/pump, and new plugs in your total cost for the outboard.

for 2k it also includes an older proline 17 boat with a new sealion galv trailer-probably worth the chance.I`d sell the boat and trailer as i only want the motor.
