My 9.9 4 stroke will run for 20 minutes when it is cold then cough really bad and shut off. I just had a guy put in a new water pump and head gasket in the motor. That cost me $300. I am really frustrated with this motor. It seems to get hot enough that you cannot even put you hand on it for 2 seconds. At the present time there is not a thermostat in it. Any advice would be great, I'm about to throw the thing away!:confused::confused:

put a new stat in it. the water is moving too fast to cool it.

tashasdaddy--Without a stat, shouldn't cold water always flow through the block? I have the lower unit off right now and I am going to double check the water pump to make sure that the guy that said he put a new one in really did.

Finally got it fixed lastnight. The hose that comes out of the top of the thermostat cover was plugged. This would not let the hot water out of the engine. Thanks for the advice
