I am going to change the impeller on the above outboard for the first time. I've paid to have it done in the past, but feel I have the skills to pull this off myself this time. Over the winter I totally rebuilt my John Deere 445 lawn tractor engine, so I at least know how to turn a wrench.
I have the factory service manual but I just want to ask a few questions before I get into the job.
1. The manual states to have the motor in reverse for removal of lower unit but then to put it in forward for reassembly, is this right?
2. The manual calls for OMC Adhesive M sealent, OMC Gasket Sealing Compound, OMC Triple Guard grease, OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease, and OMC Moly Lube. Are all of these required or are there cheaper substitutions instead of going thru the OMC dealer?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I've done many water pump jobs, and I leave it neutral.

Go to your local local auto parts store and get a small tube of 3M Contact cement and a small container of waterproof grease.
