Hi all, just bought a new boat, well new to me,the guy said the motor ran great ,well today I took it to the lake and it seemed to run a little rough at idle then when I put it in gear and gave it throttle it bogged and stalled, it seems to "gargle" and stall, did this 10 times then gave it a little run time and slowly eased the throttle and it wanted to stall but managed to run.Runs good at all throttle ranges ,stop and fish for a while then try it again ,same thing???
Also my Volt gage is only reading 12.2v when running as well as not running, how many volts should this engine put out while runnung??? TIA

voltage sounds good. The reading indicates the volts that your batt. is putting out. engine off or on. Better let the pros advise you on the engine. I might give you the wrong advise. Sounds like carb????

Sounds lean at Idle..so when you go to open it up there is not sufficient fuel available to make the step to the high speed jet...or emulsion tube.

Rebuild the carbs...they are probebly green.

TMD

Quin,I have the same engine and when new, had the same symptom for some time until I richened the idle mix screws open to around 3 turns from gently seated closed.Screw yours closed one at a time in 1/4 to 1/2 turn increments and see where they are presently set. They are located on the starboard side of carbs.

Also ,check to insure that the carb linkage roller is inline,on center, with the scribe line on the fiber throttle cam ,and just touching when controls are in nuetral. You can loosen the roller set screw for this adjustment and retighten.

If this fails ,you likely have some debris restriction in your carb idle porting.

12.2 volts sounds a bit low ,however depending on the state of battery charge, readings will fluctuate between 12.5V - 13.5V.I'm guessing your battery is a bit low on charge.Trickle your battery at 2 amp charge for 24 hrs. and watercheck engine at WOT again. If volt meter reading is the same, your reg/rec may be kaput.Mine went out last winter. You'll love the price tag on the new ones.Not.

Hi I agree with OB about the battery voltage being low. With the problems you have been having and no doubt plenty of restarts I would of thought your voltage would read over 13volts for awhile as the regulator compensated for the excess draw off from the battery. Try putting a load on the battery like a spotlight or such, check the voltage, it will drop some, then start the motor and see if the voltage comes back up. Keep us posted.

Going to have a look today, will try the idle mix adjustment and linkage, don't know if I will make it to the lake today ( 1 hr away) but will run it with the muffs on,great replies guys, thankyou.
Can I use a carburator spray, etc to just spray in the carbs when running to clean them?
Also with my voltage ?, I noticed my tach quit working a few times, then started working again, could this be because of the reg/rec?? $$

Quin,If your tach is acting up it is a tell/tale sign that the reg/rec is on its way out.New one is around $200 for your engine.Carburetor sprays or other snake oils will do nothing good for your carbs. When its time to clean and inspect them ,removal and dismantling is the prefered method.

Re: 1996 Evinrude 70hp bogs and stalls on take off

Well I checked my idle mix srews today and found the top carb srew was 31/4 turns out, middle carb was 2 3/4 and bottom was 27/8 out..lightly seated them and turned them all 3 turns out, also adjusted the little roller dodad.Put the muffs on and fired up great, put it in gear and ramped it up slowly and back, then a quick snort up,no stalls, seemed to work good, just idling a little rough, going to put some new plugs in it,haven't priced the reg/rec for it yet but being Canadian it's probably closer to $350.00!I am going to put it in the lake on Wed. so will keep ya all updated, thanks again for your replies.

Quin, bring a screw driver along.May need to do some finer mix screw adjustments on the water after a couple of runs.

Well to the boat to the lake today and it ran 100% better! only stalled out 1 time,I think it is cold blooded. How does one go about fine tuning the carbs now, they are all 3 turns out, where before each one was different,is that for a reason?? Tach worked all day and also still only reading 12.2v at WOT ?? Thanks for all the help people!

I'd richen the mix up about another 1/4 turn open next time you're out and see if it helps the stall.

Trickle charge the battery at 2 amps for 24 hrs and see if the voltage reading comes up while running at WOT.
