the lower unit in our Force 75 just died. Is the lower unit interchangeable with other brands/models?

Thanks.

Re: 1996 Force 75 lower unit

The Merc designed Force 75 and 90 of the late 90s were different engines than most other Force. Although the lower unit was designed by Merc and used Merc props. I believe the only other engine the 75 lower will swap with is the late model merc designed Force 70. While it is the same lower as used on the Force 40 and 50, the shift linkage is different and may not swap--Not sure though since I have only worked on a couple of these engines.

Re: 1996 Force 75 lower unit

Thanks.

I recently acquired an 1988 Force 85 in very good condition. This information reinforces my decision to swap the 1988 Force 85 for the 1996 Force 75.

The 85 is a nice engien but Merc made some engineering changes to the 96 75 that made it into a surprisingly strong engine. If you do make the swap, let us know how they compare performance-wise.

Are you anywhere close to southeastern PA? if so, I may be interested in making an offer for the 75

I'll post with the results after the 4th. I'm hoping the 85 performs
better than the 75 because it was very disappointing.

Sorry, I'm in Texas.

Don't know how I missed your location in the post--chalk it up to a late night. Anyway. Try for the largest diameter, fine pitch prop you can find for the 85. Like a 13 1/2 diameter X 13 or 15 pitch depending on the Toon size. --14 diameter if you can find it, or possible a 4 blade. You need the big diameter wheel to move a 'toon. The 10 inch prop on the 75 was probably why you were disappointed with performance. It's for a planing hull, not displacement.

I have this motor, how come lower unit failed? Mine still works great but motor does stall every one in awhile. 96 is built on same assembly line mariner and mercury. Pretty much same motor minus oil injection. Keystone pistons decent electronics. Not really force motors, except the blocks. I do wish i had more than one carb though.

I'm not sure what caused it, but the output shaft bearing assembly broke where it screws to the L/U housing. When that moved out of alignment, the pinion gear on the drive shaft chewed itself up.
