i just got a 15 hp gamefisher from my uncle. model 225.581508. he tells me that it is hardly borken in. as in it only has a couple of hours on it. Its in beautiful shape and has been sitting in his shed since like 97. she fires right up when i start it and the pee hole is strong and it runs pretty cool. i took it on the lake the other day and it runs so great but after a min or so of giving it some throttle in gear it acts like it wants to die out. So i checked the primer ball on the fuel tank and it seems like it needs a few more punps. so about an hour later i fired it up and 1 pull and it started and same thing it started to die out so i cut back on the throttle and pump the ball on the fuel line and it runs fine for a few minutes. what should i b looking for here as to why it is loosing its prime in the fuel primer ball?? and does it matter that i only had 2 gallons in a 6 gallon tank?????? Thanks a lot for any advice..

your motor was actually made by force, wich was bought out by mercury untill they shut down the line in 1999.

your local mercury dealer, even, mercurymarine.com , either of these places will have any parts, service and help that you may need.

youll want to do a few things before you run it again.....
water pump!
clean the carb(s)
rebuild the fuel pump
change lower unit lube

or youll kill it and have a lawn ornement.

water pump is done along with a new t-stat. the carb as he told me was cleaned like a year or so ago. i placed orders for all kinds of gaskets, diaphragm set, fuel pump gasked but i dont actually see a fuel pump anywhere in the parts blow ups in the manual that i have. im replacing all that stuff there the plate assembly-fuel pump with the reed and all. Is that what you mean as far as fuel pump? Also i changed the lower unit lube b4 i even started it. hoping that with replacing all these things involved with the fuel lines and pump and all that will fix the loosing the prime in the pump ball.

clean it again.

when fuel sits like that, especially 2 strke fuel, it gumms up very quickly, and has likely clogged some very important holes and jets in your carb. to restrict a 2stroke of its fuel is bad.

Re: 1996 gamefisher 15hp

ok how do i do that do i have to take it all apart and clean it and put it all back together. I mean i can do that and all but not sure if i need to replace gaskets and all. Im pretty good on automotive carbs and am able to rebuild off the kits but for some reason an outboard carb kinda scares me. By the way i was outside tonight and running it in a huge troff thing full of water and i noticed that there was a hiss coming out of the pre-crimped part of the primer bulb so i wacked it off reconnected it and used a hose clamp. i didnt have any problems but at the same time i didnt have problems before when running it out of a lake and in the tub. So concidering a carb rebuild cant hurt anything the kit is available. just dont know if i can just clean it out. and how much would a marina charge for a rebuild or whatever on it??

ok i just took the whole carb apart and put it back together and the gaskets seem brand new. there was nothing that i saw that was clogged so thats good right???? and i cleaned it all out i soked it in kerosiene and dot 3 brake fluid. then it sat for a few hours and a reassembly, put it on and it fired right up after 2 pulls. seems like its a little more responsive. well see if it looses its prime.. all the gaskets were new looking and i didnt clean much debres from the carb. i think that the fuel pump like you said myoutboards is whats causing the problem!!

Re: 1996 gamefisher 15hp

ok i cleaned out the carb and new fuel tank and line. took it out today and same thing it runs great as a matter of fact it started right up after 1 pull but when i put it into gear and get going after a few minutes the motor dies down until i reach down and pump the primer ball again. then it lasts another 2 minutes. On the motor the quick connect fuel fitting does not fit right cause i think that the fitting on the motor is missing something. so i have the hose just clamped on. i will b recieving the following parts from mercury parts express this week. 27-818043A 1 Diaphragm/Gasket Set
22-F197767-2 BUSHING-FUEL
F197787T3 Quick Disconnect-Engine End
27-F24748-2 GASKET
22-F901811 FILTER
its all to deal with the fuel delivery. Was just wondering if im on the right track with what im repairing??

I'd suspect the tank vent, tank itself, fuel bulb, or fuel pump.

i found the problem with mine. the fuel pump cover had a crack in it. right where the fuel filter screws in. The part nomber is 819993t1. it is replaced by a quicksilver part if u buy it through mercury dealer. It is beefed up right where mine is cracked!!

Thanks a bunch. I will have to check it. There is another problem I found with my motor. This may save you some grief in the future. The plastic seals on the top and bottom of the water tube coming, from the water pump and connecting to the bottom of the engine were damaged by heat. I would try to keep an eye on these when you change water pumps every couple of years.

I have another question. When you ordered your fuel pump kit, did it include the metal reeds? I ordered one and it did not. Thanks again for the prompt reply! Great forum!!

no i didnt replace the reeds one showed a little wear just slightly so i took it off and turned it the opisite way so that it covers that little hole. Tried that in a barrel and did just fine so i did the same with the other one.

Re: 1996 gamefisher 15hp

does anyone know what the plugs should be gapped at?? The manual for my motor says use L82YC plug gapped at 0.040 in the plugs come from the factory at .030 and in the guide at the store says .030 for my motor as well so is it 30 or 40 i dont want to burn out a coil or nothing. Thanks for everyones help getting my motor running! i could not have figured it out without you guys!!!!

Quick question...my water pump is not working on my 9.9 Gamefisher. I assume the impeller needs to be replaced. First, is there anything I should check before doing this job? Second, how difficult is it to change the water pump? It looks like the shift linkage only disconnects from the top, which means pulling the powerhead! Hopefully, I am missing something...please share any ideas...
