Vehicle specs:

1996 GMC Sierra C3500
350ci Automatic

This is my parents vehicle, but I do currently have it at my location. The fuel pump was replaced 3 months ago with a new unit(not reman), I was told the fuel filter was replaced at the same time. Since then the truck has started fine until the last 2 weeks. There was a coolant leak at the quick connect off the manifold to the heater core. I was adding coolant/water every 3-4 days at the time. I replaced the corroded connector and refilled the system. Which fixed that leak. Shortly after that is when the symptoms started. In the morning the truck will start fine. However, on days where the temperature is elevated restarting is difficult. If I'm parked in the shade all day at work the problem is normally less noticeable where as if I'm parked in the sun starting is much more difficult but it will still start. Yesterday though after being parked in the sun and finally getting it started I drove home and stopped at the grocery store where it would not start even after sitting for nearly 30 minutes. This morning I went to take it to a shop (none of which were open) and she fired right up. I'm thinking either the ignition coil is overheating or the coolant temperature sensor is on it's way out.

Dale what motor is it..does it have a cap + rotor...or 5.7 with omni phase distributer in front of water pump.....could be the coil or module....or even bad connections at starter...how does it turn over.....let us know eh

It is a the 5.7 with the distributor and cap at the rear of the engine. Turns over we no issues, just won't fire. My gut tells me it's a temperature issue but just not sure how to test the components and my multi-meter is sitting in my desk at work (of course). The battery is less than 2 years old. Can't say when the last time the plugs, cap, wires, etc were replaced, going to try to take a look today if the rain holds out.

If that engine has the flat top "crab" cap, they are notorious for causing problems. shorts out internally..cross fires. Rotor shorts to ground. coil produces a voltage you can weld with, so they're not usually a problem.

The other is fuel related. When starting, the system activates the fuel pump momentarily, then waits for a pulse from the crank sensor to restart the fuel pump. If the system doesn't hold pressure, it won't start. If you have CSFI, they gotta see 45#'s to open the injectors.

sometimes cycling the ignition, causing the fuel pump to run a few times, makes it start...if it's fuel related.

What we need to know is what you DO have at the time of the hard start. Do you have fuel under pressure at the rail? Do you have spark? I had one rotor that the spring to the center of the cap lost tension when hot and didn't connect to the coil, no spark.

Just some thing to check that happened in a shop I use to work in. The teck did not tighten up the ground for the fuel pump very well on the frame. It had the same symptoms as you have. Other things to check is oil psi, spark and fuel psi.

Well, unfortunately or fortunately depending on the point of view, I got busy at work and the truck had to be fixed pretty quick so in to the shop she went. Turns out the fuel pump went again. I haven't seen the full write up on it yet, so I don't know much more than that at this point.

Thanks for the help.

I have same with gas/ LP set up That had similar event, After 4 hours checking things out found mist from repaired leak to lp condenser Had entered top of cap, The strange part was rotor had managed to climb up the shaft and wore a crescent shaped hairline 1/2 circle thru cap allowing entry Occurred over several weeks, generally fired right up an ran fine, weather change extra crank to slow start, moisture condensed an shorted out, new cap an rotor
