I recently purchased a 1996 Johnson J30TELEDE. It had a few issues which I have worked through thanks to this forum. I now have a new issue. The motor will not pee. I have replaced the impeller (bad shape) and installed a new thermostat (would not open). Here is where my ignorance to outboard motors comes into play. Does this motor pee from the exhaust opening on the back of the motor or the tube coming off out of the side of the motor cover? I think I have the water tube aligned properly, but I am not 100% sure. I believe the only thing left is a blockage. This motor setup outside unused for years prior to purchase. Should I remove the thermostat and try to run something down there? I just read of the tell tale and am not exactly sure of what this is unless it is the retangular exhaust port on the back of the midsection I mention above. Should I remove this and run something through it? How about removing the thermostat and starting the engine briefly to see where the blockage is occuring first?

Thanks for all the help!

The tube running out of the lower side of the lower engine pan is the tell/tale. Remove the hose that leads to it from the block and insure that it or the block fitting is not obstructed.A stiff piece of wire or similar tool will work. The two exhaust reliefs at the upper end of the mid-section are designed to relieve water when the outbaord is up to speed in water with exhaust back pressure.

Your motor should produce a good stream at the pee hole and it should get stronger with more RPM of the engine. Weed eater string is a good imlement to push up there to unblock it. If your not 100% sure the water tube is aligned, pull the leg again and verify it is O.K. With the leg removed I recommend you attach a water hose directly to the water tube and run it and get the engine flushed real well. It would be a good idea to pull the stat for the first part of the procedure until you establish good flow at that point. With no flow you will cook your engine eventually. I would also suggest having a good look at the water inlet screen at the bottom of the leg to make sure it is free to suck water with no obstructions. Give that a try and let us know how it goes. Rick.

Worked on the motor this afternoon. I removed the thermostat and shot some water through there. When I removed the foot, I found the problem. It is a hard piece of something, maybe part of the old impeller. I suspect it was stuck in the bend of the water tube. It now has a strong pee stream and eveything is running good. I even took it out for a test run today. I need to get the carb dialed in but everything else perfect. Thanks for the help! This forum is great :)

I won't be long and you'll be telling others how to fix their motors. First hand experience is the best teacher but there are so many knowledgeable masters on this forum to guide us newbies in the right direction. Glad you had success. Rick.
