Good day all. I am new here, wondering if I could trouble you folks for a bit of advice. I took my boat to the lake today and by the grace of God didn't blow myself up. She was running poorly. Maybe 50% horsepower at best, and kept dying at idle everytime I tried to put her in gear.

I put her back on the trailer, ran her up to the wash station, and pulled the cowl. THe engine compartment was full of gasoline!!!.

So, I dried her out, and had my wife fire the engine while I watched (fire extinguisher in hand) and found that the fuel was coming out of what I assume was the float overflow for the carb for the top left cylinder (as you stand looking at the front of the engine). I didn't have it hooked up to the hose at the time, but I only ran it 3 times for less than 10 seconds a pop. Hope I didn't hurt the water pump. More on that later...

Anyway, I towed her home, and set to removing the carb in question. Took it all apart, and found absolutely nothing wrong. The needle and seat looked fine, with no contamination. The floats moved readily, and were not punctured of filled with fuel. So, i figured that it was a job for someone smarter than myself, and put it all back together to take it in to the mechanic. Then, out of simple, morbid curiosity, I hooked it up to the hose and fired it up. No fuel leak.

However, no water was coming out of the little squirty thing at the back of the engine, and after it ran for about a minute, it started heating up. got to 150.

So now I have two questions.

1.) What could cause an intermittent float bowl overflow? Could I have fixed it just by taking it apart and putting it back together?

2.) Did starting this thing without the hose burn up my impeller, or does the hose and earmuff thing just not work worth a darn?

I guess I'll go put it in a lake to find out both, keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get any big fuel leaks while I'm there...

Yes there could have been trash in the carb keeping the needle from seating.
And yes its possible you ruined yoour impeller. They don't last long without lube (water).
