Just bought a 21ft rapalo center console power by a 1996 johnson 130hp 2 stroke oil injected. Took out Saturday and the max speed was 8.5 miles per hour and that is with the throttle almost buried. Then the motor sounds like it cavitates,or cuts out with vibration. Boat should do 3 times that speed. Any help would be appreciated ... Would a broken spark plug wire cause this ? I just ordered new wires and a new fuel filter. Again any help please traveled 32 miles Saturday and it took almost 4 and 1/2 hours major bummer. Please help........

What is the model number of the outboard? Has the outboard been sitting for a while? It sounds like a fuel issue to me and I would suspect dirty high speed jets. You should clean the carbs first before throwing parts at it.

J130txada is the model number. What do you think about the spark plug wire. It did sit for a bit but has been run recently quite a lot. It dies sometimes when shifting gears.

Is cleaning the carbs something I can do ? or should I take it in ouch?

Sorry I missed this the first time. This outboard should have the OMC system check engine monitoring. It almost sounds like your engine is in slow mode. When you move the key to the on position without starting the engine do you have a horn that beeps once for a self test? If not check to see if the horn has either been disabled or is no longer working. If you have the system check monitor it will have dummy lights for high temp, low oil, no oil and check engine. Over heating will prevent the engine from accelerating the slow system will also engage for no oil. Is you VRO connected and does it have TC-W3 oil in the tank?

It has a green dummy light on the dash disabled, it also has a horn that is disabled. Sorry what is a vro and what is tc-w3 oil in what tank ? (the oil for injection into fuel) sorry but this one is all new to me. Should I try fixing the wire to the horn. Thanx

By VRO he is talking about the oil injection system. TC-W3 is the oil that a 2-stroke motor needs mixed with the fuel in order to run. Either your motor will have an oil injection system, in which case there will be an oil tank that is filled with TC-W3 oil, connected to the motor next to the gas line.

Sometimes the VRO or OMS (Oil Mixing System) has been disabled. If the oil injection has been disabled then you need to mix TC-W3 oil with your gasoline directly in the fuel tank. The ratio should be 50:1 Fuel:eek:il.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

You need to get the service manual for the outboard, if you don't have the owner's manual you can also order that. If you are mechanically inclined you should have no issues working the outboard as long as you have the factory service manual avoid the after market manuals as they are not very good.

First things first you really need to get the OMC System check working properly. The warning horn and dummy lights will warn you of a problem and can save you big bucks when something goes wrong. Until you know the oil injection system is working run 16 ounces of TC-W3 two cycle outboard motor oil to 6 gallons of gas (50:1 oil mix). It doesn't mater what brand of oil you use as long as it says TC-W3 on the label. Also make sure your oil tank is full. As you run the outboard keep an eye on the level it should go down.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

Ok. Yes I know about the oil. There is a big reservoir with a separate compartment for the oil injection. They have it set up with a line that is similar to the fuel with a squeeze bulb inline going up to the engine.the oil tank (jug) is close to full hardly uses any. The one thing I did notice is the engine hardly smokes and I have been around a few 2 strokes. Now on the oil issue wouldn't the engine have burned up on Saturday's 32 mile round trip if the oil injection system wasn't working ? The actual service manual for that model has been ordered.85.00 money well spent. No one has commented on the broken spark plug wire?

If the spark plug wire is broken it needs to be replaced most certainly. You can also get a spark tester and make sure that you have a hot spark on all 4 wires although I don't think that is your issue.

It sounds like your motor is in SLOW mode and we need to figure out why. Because you couldn't run a full speed you might not have hurt it won't know until we resolve everything. Also you should do a compression check. All four cylinders should have equal compression + or - 10%.

I would run 50:1 premix until you are certain she is getting the proper amount of oil your outboard will be extra smoky but at least you know it is getting the oil it needs. Also is it pumping water? If it isn't peeing from the pee hole that is not a good thing either.

It is scary when a previous owner starts to disconnect stuff.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

Ok. Talked to a marine mechanic yesterday and he just wanted to know if the oil reservoir was using oil and the bad news is it hasn't moved since I bought it. I suspect that the previous owner started having problems with the vro and settled with slow mode for putting around harbor. I looked at a 2003 Honda 130 for 6500 plus all control cables and rigging properly about 8000 installed and a 1997 evinrude 200hp sea runner that would bolt right up to my existing omc controls for 4500. Right now I just want to make what I got work. I can see the vro pump and one of the two prong plugs is unplugged. Getting to the point where it looks like it's headed to the shop. Any ideas would still be appreciated before hooking up and taking to the shop............thanks

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

I see four choices for you If the engine doesn't knock and the compression is good then you should be fine and you could consider the first three choices

1) You can disconnect the VRO and use premixed fuel but you should make sure the OMC system check is connected for the check engine and water temp.

2) Take it to a mechanic and have him go through everything. Make sure the VRO is working and all sensors and alarms function properly. I would also have him do a complete tune up and then you should be good to go.

3) Fix everything yourself once you get the service manual. When you test the engine I would run Premixed 50:1 fuel in the tanks until I was comfortable that the oil system is working properly.

4) Replace the motor.

If I were you I would do either Option # 2 if you are not comfortable working on it. Option 3 or 1 depends how cheap you want to be I prefer to do things the correct way. All three options will be cheaper then re-powering if the outboard hasn't been hurt. If the compression isn't good or the bearings have been hurt then I would do option 4.

Between the Honda and the SeaRunner the 200 will make your boat run like a scalded cat, the Honda will be slower out of the hole but it will be quiet although you will have to do annual oil changes were as with 200 you will have to add oil. Just make sure whatever you buy that it has been checked out.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

So if I disconnect vro wires cut and plug oil in hose. And run premixed fuel through the gas line what has to happen for the engine to come out of slow mode? Will it just run better once premix is going into the engine? Or is there some sensor that has to be disabled to allow the engine to come out of slow mode.....

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

The previous owner disconnected stuff for a reason we need to find out what that reason was.

Before disconnecting anything else I would hook the OMC system check backup including the horn. Once you have done that when you turn the key to the on position the system check lights will illuminate and the horn will give a warning beep. It takes about 10 seconds to cycle through everything. If you have a portable tank that you can put premix into I would connect that to the engine if the VRO is working the engine will get extra oil it won't hurt the engine to get extra oil just make things extra smoky is all. I would then put a set of muffs on the engine I would fire it up in the drive way and see what you get for warning lights. SLOW can also be engaged if the motor thinks it is over heating. You never did answer back if the the motor had water coming out of the pee hole while it was running.

Thanks, at least we know it is pumping. Checkout the PDF page 59 and see if that is causing slow mode.

Re: 1996 Johnson 130 hp power problems

if yur getting top RPM's- check for prop hub slipping. no RPM's- check compression, spark. go to mech. that knows what to do. if it has been sitting for over 5 wks., could be dirty carbs
