Hello,

I am coming over from the sailing side of boating, so please excuse me if I don't describe this problem with all the correct terms (feel free to correct).

I just bought a 17 Bowrider with a 1996 Johnson 88 HP outboard engine. After a successful demonstration by the previous owner I bought the boat and moved it over the water in a 40 minute trip. At normal speed the boat operated well. As we arrived at my dock though, and I reduced the speed of the boat it stalled.

The next day I went back to it and got it to start and go both in forward and reverse in slow speeds (I remained tied in the my slip).

I went to take it out today, and while it starts pretty well I cannot be the throttle back so it will just idle. It stalls.

I discovered today though, that two of the wires going into two spark plug boots had come out. When I insert them back, the engine starts (but will not idle).

Obviously I need to do a proper repair to get the wires secure in the boots. But would that be causing the engine to stall of might I have a different problem?

Thanks so much.

Post the results of a compression test.----It is the #1 step in trouble shooting one of those motors.
