Trying to find how to disconnect shift shaft linkage on 1996 Johnson. Finding information about different horsepower's on YouTube , but not 8hp . My 96 is 1 piece shaft , I think . Needing instructions on how to disconnect , videos are best for me to follow . Any information would be GREATLY appreciated . Thank you in advance .

The shift rod simply pulls from the mechanism at the top of the leg and stays attached to the lower unit

Drive shaft pulls from the crankshaft. staying with the lower unit. Unless you plan to replace seals probably best to avoid pulling the shaft from the gear case

Water tube pulls from the pump staying attached to the power-head

You may find its best to take the 5" extension off with the gear case , but fit it to the exhaust housing first when reassembling, I find that is vital with my salt water motor because until its cleaned up the drive shaft will not pull through the bush in the extension.

Trouble with You Tube videos is you don't know which are good and which are garbage
The service manual is much more reliable
