1996 Johnson 9.9 where'd this bolt come from?

I took the prop off my motor to have it repaired. No bad damage just some nicks. When I removed the prop I found a threaded bolt wedged in the cone. It had to have slipped down from the hole in the shaft. I have no clue where it goes or what it's for. The motor ran fine last season. I know the bolt must have been there awhile since it cut into the back of the prop. Any suggestions? Do you think I should take it to a repair shop? Is this a do it yourself project?

Hello.
It could be from your neighbor's lawn mower.
But seriously,it sounds much like a detective story. You should remember the last repair or service you had done on this engine and check in that area, if there are any empty holes where this bolt might fit.
While you are at it check for any other loose ones.If you find anything loose or the empty hole this one came from ,make sure to use some blue colored lock tight when you tighten 'm up again.
Good luck.

Most likely, it's one of the inner exhaust housing bolts (about 1" or 1-1/4" long?). On those motors, 4 bolts are used to bolt the housing to the base of the powerhead. I've have seen on rare occassions where one loosens and falls down into the area behind the bearing carrier.

-John

maybe belonging to a zinc anode assembly? Is there a zinc on the underside of the cavitation/ventilation plate?
