Good morning. Working on this "new to me" outboard. A little background...changed impeller/lower unit gear oil Tuesday last week. Used the boat 5 hours this weekend with no issues. Completing a visual inspection, I found what appears to be burnt engine oil coming out of the water intake yesterday. Drained the lower unit gear oil, no water present looks just like the fluid I put in on Tuesday. Pressure tested the lower unit as I figured vertical shaft seal (or maybe shift shaft), held 12psi for a few minutes no problem. Refilled unit, cleaned up seepage around water intake tube. It continued to discharge what appears to be spent oil like from exhaust. Cleaned it up last night, had a new layer of it present this morning.
Before I drain and drop the lower unit and break out the spray bottle looking for a leaky seal that doesn't appear to be present...what are the odds that I may have seated the exhaust tube seal improperly and that is allowing the usual 2 stroke sludge to seep out the screen? I may drop the unit tonight and look to see if this is even possible. The lower unit pressure testing fine has me absolutely baffled.
