My friend just bought a new boat and sold me his old beat up one for $500.00
The bad news is the motor has no reverse(hit a rock) and he has been using it this way for at least 6 months.
I figure I need a lower unit.
Should I try to have this one rebuilt?
How much does a rebuild cost.

The motor runs like a top and is attached to a 1996 17ft starcraft superfisherman.
The place he bought his new boat wouldn't let him trade it in because the bottom is all scratched from beaching and no reverse.
I feel like I stole it from hime but he likes to fish not fix things.
Thanks

You owe it to yourself to get a real estimate.
Why does it have no reverse? ( not always due to impact with a rock) Did anyone remove this lower unit? If so, were the shift shaft splines aligned properly? What if it only needs an hour of labor to make it shift?

Rabidfish,
I just thought that reverse was out because it worked just fine until he was backing up and hit a rock with his stainless prop.
After that it would still go into reverse and work at idle but everytime you gas it in reverse it would pop out of gear an grind. now if you try to put it in reverse it just grinds.
