need to replace all water /cooling hoses on my 4.3l Chevy engine. Of course no auto shops have hoses but marina does at about $50 a pop or higher. Anyone overcome this with modifications or do I bite the bullet and spend $$$ on the 5 hoses I need to replace.

Have you tried NAPA? Give them the part number of the hoses and they can likely have them in a day if they aren't on the shelf. I don't know if the price will be any better or not.
NAPA has access to a lot of marine parts but often the counter guys don't know it until you give them a part number.

any particular reason why you need to replace the hoses? NAPA should be able to help. some of the hoses are same as auto and some are unique. You could check iBoats for pricing on the hoses.

I replaced all my hoses when I first bought and went through my boat. Picked up all the hoses I needed here on Iboats on the volvo site. Use the diagrams to pick out which hoses you need, easy as that and I definitely don't remember them costing $50 a pop.
