runs perfect on the hose of course! cranked in the water, acted a little cold, gave it some throttle and it bogged down, cranks right back, gave more throtlle faster, and she took off like a striped ape! runs perfect at high speed, but falls on its face at idle or a little throttle. thoughts?

you've got an "idle speed control" box that may be goin' south messin with idle timin'... it can be completely eliminated with no problem.. you will need ta readjust idle timing if you get rid of it... may be time for a little carb cleaning with all new gaskets?.. those carbs have tha fine tune idle adjustment screws so you might try messing with those but really doubt it will do any good...

Being a 1996 time to refresh the carbs with new gaskets, replace supply hoses and replace fuel pump diaphragm also.
