I am wondering if it is possible to take the entire tilt /trim assembly from a 1987 yamaha 70 and put it on a 1996 yamaha 40 to replace a broken tilt unit.

the 70 is a donor motor so the relays and other parts should be available assuming that they all work.

I have enjoyed participating in the Johnson Evinrude side of this forum but this is my first Yamaha. I don't have any experience with Yamaha outboards.

Re: 1996 yamaha tilt trim swap (it works )

I just finished swapping the 1989 70 hp tilt trim unit onto the 1996 40 hp

it fit perfectly. :)

i cleaned and painted the tilt motor cover because it was rusty.

the pin on the top of the cylinder was ruined with rust, had to use the other one.

I bought the entire center unit so I have lots of spare parts. it came in handy. at least half the bushings were bad. but I ended up with enough to finish the job.

the trailering lock coupler that joins the 2 trailer lock levers was rusted out.

I made a new one out of a piece of 3/8 stainless tubing.

I am finishing up my tilt trim project. my 1996 40 that came tilt only has a solid state relay [NR1-06 5Y14 hitachi]

I am wondering if it is big enough to run the larger motor on the tilt/trim unit or if i need t use the relays that came off of the donor motor, 1987 70 horse.
