I aquired a boat with a 135 merc. The previous owners had the engine quit suddenly on the lake. I am going to look at the electrical system for the fuel and ign.

Are there any common electrical problems with this engine or does anybody know of a probable cause of this problem. ie, electrical components with a high failure rate.

Thanks Scott

It's not common for that to happen. These motors are pretty much bullet proof with proper care.

Check for evidence that the regular maintenance items have been done. That may help lead you to the problem.

See if it turns over by hand freely and then give it go. If it starts and stays running on the hose then that might suggest something fuel related. Could be something as simple as a clogged filter but you'd want to find out why it clogged if it looks like it's been changed recently. Could be hoses breaking down from ethanol gas.

If it cranks but won't start then check for spark with a spark tester. Remember, never test one of these motors by holding the plug against the block. You can severly overbuild a coil and damage or worse, possibly blow a switchbox. A simple single plug neon light tester will get you the best results without damage.

If you have spark then get back on the fuel issue.
