Hi,

I aquired a boat with a 135 black max. The previous owner had the engine quit suddenly after 2 hous of smooth running.

I am assuming that the problem is with the electrical for the fuel or the ignition. Are there any known problem areas with any electrical components of this engine or does anyone know of probable causes?

Thanks, Scott

Scott, the only known problem is that the VRs tend to overheat and burn up. The ign systems is a proven design, not to say that nothing ever goes wrong with it....

Start with basic troubleshooting

Compression test to verify mechanical integrity of each cyl

Spark test using an adjustable gap tester set to 7/16 inch to verify the stator, ignition module and coil, operation. A DVA test of the stator is also advisable to verify the condition of the High Speed windings in the stator.

Test Fuel Pump Output, clean carbs

Water pump impeller

Gear case oil, pressure and vacuum test if any water found.

Then crank it up!
