1997 150hp ficht will not start

I have run into my first problem with my 1997 ficht 150hp ocean pro that I have owned for 10 years. After fishing for 2 hours the motor would not start to come on in. It would just crank but no fire whatsoever. After being towed in I brought it to a mechanic and was told that this motor has an awful reputation and is not worth fixing. This is the first that I have heard of such a thing since I haven't had any trouble in 10 years. He hooked up the code reader and the last code is:
code 28 start assist circuit (sac) malfunction
His diagnosis was that it needed a new emm and I should just scrap the motor rather than bothering to fix it.

I am not satisfied with that diagnosis and came here for help. I am an electrical engineer by trade so I can be handy with electrical control systems but not so much on the mechanical side. Are there any supporting hardware I should check before removing the emm and sending it in for repair?

Code 28 is a shift switch code, more likely your problem is the ignition module has failed, only the 1997-99 years models had this type system. It is part #586381 and pretty pricey new but you may can get one thru DFI ....

So you are saying that the description from the mechanic's printout doesn't match the code number?

Would the shift switch keep it from starting?
If it isn't in neutral it will not crank; but it is in neutral and cranking. Just no fire at all.

I am having a similar problem with my 98 175 ficht, do you determine your problem?

My engine has a separate EMM and Ignition Module.
My Ignition Module was the issue with my engine as the Faztbullet suggested.
After some more independent research that lead to dead ends, I broke down and sent it in as suggested.
My engine now runs better than it had in years.

I suppose I forgot to close this out and thank the forum for help, thank you Faztbullet and thank you Iboats.com.
