I have a rebuilt 1997 175 Johnson Ocean Runner on a 20 foot center console.

I have noticed the last several times out that I have to play with the shifter a little to find neutral. Once I find it the engine turns over right away.

Is something slipping? Please advise.

Thanks

Is it hard to get out of gear? I ask because those engines have a sift interupter. It's mounted on the sift lever assmble where the cable attches to motor. It may not be working.
It could also be your cable and/or control box is worn.

Are you having trouble finding neutral once its running or are you having trouble finding neutral so the starter will engage?

I have having trouble finding neutral so the starter will engage. The way that i find neutral now is I move the shifter to what i think the neutral position is and if I don't get the engine to turn over I then slide the shifter either forward or back a little. I do this until it turns over. Sometimes I find neutral right way and other times it can take up to 3 or 4 attempts.
