1997 200 EFI Timing

I don't understand the timing specifications on this engine. The repair manual says "maximum timing at cranking speed = 16 deg BTDC. At 5800 RPM = 22 deg BTDC". Then there is another figure called "idle speed/pickup timing" and is 0-9 deg ATDC. The majority of the procedure is performed with the engine cranking only, not running. I have a factory repair manual, but it is not clear when to apply which timing values. I don't understand the "idle speed/pickup timing" at all??<br /><br />Help anyone?

If you have manual 90-824052R2 dated September 1997, and it matches your serial number, you must have a model 200 XRI. ON page 2C-9 para 1 , just flooow the instructions. But remember you have skipped 3 steps on page 2C7 and 2C8 which may cause all of your other adjustments to be incorrect. The pickup timing should be for carb model only

The Max spark advance set while cranking the motor over with the key is less advance because of lower RPMs. If you set that at 16' BTDC max advance while cranking the motor over with the key or remote starter, THEN you crank it up and put a timing light on it at 5000+ RPM's, you will see that your 16' setting will be at about 22' actual at high rpm. Is this more confusing? Clanton is right about the idle pickup....Your EFI is set through the ECU... I have also been backing my carb'd 2.5s max timing off about 2 to 4 degrees....to keep them from burning pistons.

Clanton, <br />I have the same repair manual. Under the specifications for 200 XRI fuel inj models on page 2C-2 it shows the idle speed/pickup timing value of 0-9 deg ATDC (for fuel injected models). Following the procedure is where I'm having the problem! For instance, on page 2C-9 step 2 under "static idle timing", it says set timing to "appropriate setting", and says the same thing on the next page under "static maximum timing". Then on 2C-12 under "idle timing, engine running" it again says, adjust timing for "appropriate setting". So there are 3 different steps in the procedure that call for timing values, I don't know what values to use in which step. If you know, tell me what value to use on page 2C-9, 2C-10, and 2C-12.
