I need to manually tilt my motor to get rid of some air in the trim/tilt system. I tried to unscrew the release screw but it won't budge. I notice there's a circular metal clip near the opening to the hole where the screw is. Any idea what it's for?
Thanks!

You don't need to remove the screw to release the motor, just unscrew it a little. Unscrewing that will not help with bleeding the system. The system will self bleed, if the unit is working properly, by cycling it up & down a few times. To work properly the unit needs to be bolted to the motor, the motor on the boat or stand and the lower unit on.

Re: 1997 225 Ocean Runner Manual Tilt Question

I need to unscrew it enough to allow me to tilt it up manually to work some air out of it. Also need to tilt it up to add fluid. Got that advice here in this forum. The motor grinds when I tilt it and it doesn't travel up and down much. It tries to move but just can't do it. Does the clip need to be removed to loosen the screw?

No. But i will be pretty tight 45 inch pounds I think. Thats pretty tight. Since this motor is a 97 and it's probably never been turned you may need an impact driver to loosen it.

Good point. It's a standard head screw. Tough to torque it too much without buggering up the head. They should have used a machine screw instead.

$20 impact screwdriver from sears will loosen it, leave the snap ring alone.
Thats not grinding you hear, its probably hi pressure spitting, bubbles.
