My starter is working fine but the tin cover is badly rusted. Should I replace this starter as a precaution? Are there good alternatives to high dollar Mercury starters?

Thank you.

Howdy,

Probably not unless you filled the bilge with salt water!

Sealed marine starters are always more expensive than their automotive cousins..... You must use a marine starter though.

If your starter is defective you can have it rebuilt by an autoelectric rebuilder or get one from any of the aftermarket places..........

Like right here on iboats! http://www.iboats.com/Mercruiser-Starters/dm/*******.358618935--**********.428050544--view_id.269590
