I have a 1997 Evinrude SPL 50hp I think...... Model number is E50ESLEUS. My problem is that I can't figure out if a PO changed the engine block, and whether I have a 40hp or a 50hp. There is a few RED FLAGS that tell me its not original to the motor. 1. It has the big red deuscth connector which is supposed to be on models 1995 and below right??? 2. It has a 50hp carb with Orfice #56d on top and a 40hp carb with Orfice #47D on the bottom. E50ESLEUS is supposed to have carbs with Orfice #55d. 3. Serial number on what looks like a freeze plug is different from serial number on motor. On my other 50hp which is a 1999 the serial number on the freeze plug matches the serial number on the motor
If someone could help me find out if my engine block is original to the motor that would be awesome!!!

The plot thickens. According to the parts manual a 1997 50 hp should have a 55D orifice and a 1997 40 hp should have a 49D from factory.

I read that as well.... I think I'm going to order a set of P/N 0435910 orfice 55d carbs and see where that takes me.

Are the carb part numbers the same or two different carbs? How did that thing run? Lol

It actually runs ok... The carbs were bad when I got motor and the PO had just put carb kits into both of the carbs, he couldn't figure out what was wrong with them. It turns out he forgot a gasket and the floats weren't level in either carbs. The other day I put the linkages back at factory spec because the PO messed with them to try and make the carbs work.....
Its ideling pretty good and it runs good wide open, I got 5mph more out of it just adjusting the linkages. I'm hitting 27 in a 15ft 1972 Starcraft with I think 45HP

Two different carbs, I work at a marina close to where I live and my boss was helping me figure this out and I noticed that one of the rollers in the linkage was for a 40hp, so I took the carbs off and the top on was #56d and the bottom one had #47d, I would never have figured this out if I hadn't noticed the wrong roller.

What I think happened was the motor died, then the PO had an old powerhead laying around and stuck it on there and just grabbed the first two carbs he saw.

I just ordered a pair of the correct carbs with orfice size #55d, carb P/N 0435910, hope it does something.

No Title

Here are some picture of the motor, sorry if they're blurry, I had to downsize them a lot to fit
