I bought this 1997 Evinrude 4hp for $20 seized up, knowing it at least had a good lower. I bought it along side a 1982 Johnson 4hp that spun over but was untested.. I got the Johnson running pretty easy, but I managed to get the Evinrude un stuck very easy with just a little gear oil and rocked the flywheel a slight bit.. Compression was great and I got spark.. It had a broken choke rocker shaft on the carb so I bought a similar carb and swapped it, but it did not have one connection which looked like just a vent.. I let it sit since march or so
For giggles, at about 7 pm last night, I stuck it in a barrel of water, put some gas in the tank and 4 pulls later it was running perfectly. This was with gear oil fouled spark plugs and it smoked like a witches cauldron for a few mins. It has a pee hole though and it's got water, so with a new impeller, and gear oil it will be water ready. I ran it for a good 20 mins, and it won't idle really low so I'll bump it slightly. It's not the right carburetor. I'm going to do the idle adjustment on fresh plugs because they might be the idle issue.. I'm pretty happy with it. I have $90 into it right now total
