I’m thinking of buying a boat with 1997 90Hp Evinrude on it.

Generally speaking are these good motors, do they have a history of being reliable any problems I should know about.

The motor hasn’t been used much and when I water tested it ran fine, however I couldn’t get it above 5K RPM

Hi fishhawk and welcome to the iboats forums.

What you are looking at is probably one of the best blocks from the old OMC company ever made. It's reliable and with care will last a very long time.

On the rpm issue, this could be just a proping issue. The operating range, I think, is between 5 and 5500rpm. A good local wrench can help ya' out with this.

In any event, the purchase of the rig would not, IMHO, be a mistake.

Keep us posted....thanks.
