I am looking at a pontoon to purchase. It has a 1997 90HP Evinrude. We put the ears on it so it would have water and started it. There was a small dribble out of the pee hole. Question does the thermostat have to before ot releives itself. Also the lower unit was serviced with a new water pump and so forth. the boat shop said the temp horn sounded all the time so they unhooked it. We ran the motor for a few minutes and you could still lay your hand on the head so its not getting hot right away. Is just a problem with the horn itself?
Thanks

Well as I understand it. The horn was not sounding all the time untill the boat shop worked on it. The boat had not been used for a while as of last year. They took it in to have routine maint. done. They put a new water pump in and the horn sounded all the time. We ran the motor for about 10 minutes on the ears and you could still lay a hand on the cylinder head so its not getting hot that quick anyway. I thought that they did not pee untill the thermostat opened.

A guess is that there is something blocking the pee hole. Water should come out all the time. If the motor is still not over hot when you ran it, id say take it to the water and have them give you a test ride, just to be sure. Dont buy it with out it being in the water.
Same as a car, drive b4 you buy.

still something fishy......those heads should be hot to the touch after ten minutes. The thermostats were probably removed to try to remedy a horn problem.

Tricky when purchasing and not knowing the history. Could be buying a can of worms.

The heads were not even hardly warm. The horn sounded as soon as it had power not after it had been run for while. The boat has not been in the water for a year. The boat has had very little use. He had the lower unit service because the boat shop had told him should be done every three years.

Just make sure you test it on the water. If those muffs are not positioned right that alarm will sound and not pee much. Try repositioning the muffs aft and see if the stream gets stronger. Don't buy it unless they fix the alarm . That alarm should sound momentarily every time you turn the key for a system check. Test it on the lake before you buy at wot for at least 10 minutes.

whats the model number???

are the thermostats right on the outside on the top of the heads? where you can unscrew a large plastic hex bolt and remove them???

if the motor has a hose that the tell tale stream comes out of, then a wasp could have plugged it up.....if in 5 minutes the heads can still be touched for 3 seconds...then the motor isnt get hot...

you can have shorts make the horn sound....thats common....and the tell tale getting plugged happens...on the other hand if they took the thermostats out, you might not get enough restriction to get a good tell tale stream.....

soooo whats the model number...or whats the MOTOR cover say??????
