Took the family riding and fishing. My motor has seemed down on power lately but this time, after runnig for 20 minutes or so, the power really dropped off and the boat would hardly go. The motor seemed like it was overheating, so I checked to make sure water was coming out of the "relief hole", there was and it was hot, and shut her down. After shutting it down and letting it cool off, it wouldn't start.
Thought maybe the plugs were bad since one was covered in oil and gas so I put new plugs in today and tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Pulled a plug and turned it over and didn't seem to have any noticeable spark. The motor seems to be getting gas.

The top plug is plug #1 right?

How do I remove the flywheel to get to the coil packs and check their electrical connections?

How do I test the coil pack?

Can the water pump be bad even if it is pushing water out of the releif hole in the thermastat housing?

ANy other ignition components I should check?

Thanks for any help

Re: 1997 Gamefisher 9.9 overheated and now won't start

I just posted a message, asking for help with finding a repair shop for my 9.9 Gamefisher. I had the same problem as you. Engine overheated even with water coming out and it seized up. Sears came out and try to pull start motor. He said he could could hear the water pump scraping inside. I remember wondering if there was enough water circulating when i took the boat out. Sears told me they don't fix engines???

Mine turns over. It was a little "tight" after I first shut it down, but when it cooled down it turned over fine. Doens't seem to be much spark though. I'll listen to see if I can hear the water pump scraping. $79 for a water pump replacement kit from Sears. An impeller is only $13. Not sure if I need the kit or just the impeller.

Not good. low compression. 50 psi on cylinder 1 and 70 psi on cylinder 2.

Did see a spark when I turned it over in the evening.

How easy is it to re-ring the pistons?

Where did you see the special? Was it on their website? i looked but couldn't find it.

i am going to try retourqing the head to see if it maybe a head gasket issue. I noticed some light oil residue seeping from the head gasket, may go ahead and replace it if it's cheap enough. May as well do the exhaust port gaskets as well. I hope that is all it is.

My old Suzuki 2 stroke motorcycle was seized solid several times due to oil injection problems, and that thing still started and rand like a champ after dropping some oil through the plug hole.
This gamefisher 9.9 never seized tight. It just started losing power and getting hot, so I shut her down. It still turned over with the pull rope, just never would sputter or even give me any indication of starting.

Got a chance to torque down the head bolts to 120 in/lbs. Fired on the first pull. The head bolts had loosened way up. Had to tighten the lower 3 with a wrench and guess at the torque since I couldn't take the lower cover off without removing the block. Also tightened the exhaust cover bolts onthe head as they were a loose too. Can't wait to put it on the water and see how it does.
