Can anybody tell me the height requirement on the shift shaft for this model? I had to remove it to put it in a lower unit rebuild and did not measure it before taking it off. I was told by someone it is 26-1/2". But i do not know if that is when it is neutral and to the center of the hole. I was told it was to the bottom of the hole. Any knowledgeable advice?

i just replaced my lower unit, motor is a 2000, lower was 1987. shift rod is threaded so it is adjustable. I found in nuetral rod should be even with driveshaft. you may have to play with it.

i tried lower unit 4 times at different heights. I finally got it to go in reverse now but it is not smooth. I thought there was some kind of chart to go by. I heard that some mechanics have a board or ruler with a screw to measure with? a chart from the manufacturer? anybody else with suggestions.

Thanks for the chart on the height requirements for this. After reading this chart I believe the chart said 26-19/32" which I think is between 26-1/2" and 26-5/8" which is more reasonable. I cannot get the shaft exactly at 26-19/32 because of the turn of the shaft only goes in one direction due the curve. For a 1997 200 horsepower ocean runner with a 25" shaft. I am really not too sure, though about the measurement now . I thought there was three shaft lengths for this model. A 20" a 25" and a 30" shaft. I have a 25" shaft. I tried the 26-19/32" measurement according to the chart and now the shifter will not go into reverse. will I have to adjust the shifting cables now or is this the wrong maeasurement?

sparkyboat, After rereading the chart you attatched. The chart does not show a measurement for a 1997 200 h.p. johnson ocean runner with a 25" shaft. These are later model shift shaft heights prior to 1991. Do you or anybody have current shift heights for 1997. Model is a j200txeua.

also you may have to adjust your shifter cable after reinstalling the foot.

26-15/16 inches. from center of hole at top of shaft to LU mounting surface. LU mounting surface is the surface that presses up against the bottom of the midsection.

It aint real critical...book says +- 1/32"...nonsense.
