Hey all, looking at buying a 1997 16' tracker boat with a 40 HP 2 stroke mariner ELO. Just curious what "family" this motor in. Is it a de-tuned 50 hp or a ramped up 25/30hp like so many engines are today.

For example one of my pops OMC 50hp engines could be turned into a 60 by switching a few jets in the carb.

Trying to find out some details and options available before talking turkey with the dealer tomorrow.

Any major issues with mariner? Not real popular on the left coast but I have never heard anyone bash them either-been around forever. Seem popular on the east coast.

THANKS!!

The 40 came in 3 variants, 2 cyl, 3 cyl and 4 cyl. Without knowing which it's had to answer your question, but here's some background.

2 cyl was the same engine as the 30hp. Great engines.

3 cyl was the smallest in the 'family' of a 50, 55 and 60.

4 cyl was the old 'Classic 50'....

Mariner is Mercury in gray paint. All parts and service identical, like the older johnson/evinrude.

HTH,

Chris...........
