1997 mercury 115 hp remove steering cable

I am trying to take the steering cable out of tilt tube what size wrench is need to stop the jam nut from turning. If I turn the cable nut the whole threaded rod in tube turns so I think I need to put a wrench on the jam nut to hold it.

I think it is 1-1/4"-----12 inch " shifting spanner " will also work.

Thanks 1-1/4 it is ! The back were the the steering cable goes in to tube if free, you can push pull with minimum resistance. At the wheel it turns but has resistance more so one way than the other. Is this ok , boat is a bayliner capri .

Just going to replace cable!
