Hi.
I have a top bearing going out and I have some questions.
1- Can I just loosen the top case bolts to get the bearing out?
2- Can I replace the just the bearing or do I need to replace the whole assembly?
3- Some say a bad bearing will ruin the crank itself. What should I look for to know if its ok?
Thanks Guys

1) Yes you can loosen and pull it out...no prying
2) Depends if bearing spun in housing and damaged it
3) Crank surface should has a polished smooth finish...any imperfections or markings crank needs repaired.

Thank You, Faztbullet.
So if the bearing spins in the housing assy, I need to replace the bearing and the housing? And, if the bearing is still tight in the housing (I take it that means the housing is good) How do I remove the old bearing? Press it out and press in the new one?

Put new bearing in freezer for about a hour...then put bearing housing on top of a coffee can and heat in oven at 375 degrees...wait and you will hear a plop inside can. Remove new bearing from freezer, open oven and flip housing and drop new bearing in housing and then place outside to cool.

I'm sorry. Are you saying to heat up the housing and the old bearing will fall out or do i need to press it out? Was I correct in assuming the housing is good if the old bearing is still tight in it?

Thanks! I have ordered a flywheel puller but, I am wondering, How do I re-install the flywheel? Does the puller tool install it as well?

Seller was new on ebay and he never sent the puller. Ebay refunded my $$. Does it have to be a merc brand puller?

Thanks for that faztbullet, this old dog just picked up a new trick :)

It doesn't have to be Merc puller. A flywheel holder is worth buying as well, even though you can still do the job without one.
When you put the flywheel back on, it's just a keyed shaft (like a water pump) so the bolt draws it down.
You'll need a torque wrench (100 ft*lbs if memory serves)
