I am looking into replacing the internal anodes on my motors as preventative maintenance.
Any thoughts on if these are neccessary items to change?

if done routinely its not an issue.
if this is the first time for a saltwater motor you will find the anodes have swollen and wont come out the holes if you break one off you MUST retrieve it or it blocks water flow.
the ones on the stbd side are a definate pain to access.

ok, thanks.
When I do get to this and since it has never been done, any tricks for removing a swollen anode? If they do break off, do I have to remove the heads to get em out?

The motors have roughly 550 hrs and are used in the Upper Chesapeake Bay brackish waters. I'm hoping they'll be in somewhat good shape.

Re: 1997 S225TXRV internal anodes

only trick I know is to drill a small hole into the anode and insert a #8 or so self tapping screw and attempt to withdraw them.
best I remember there are 2 on each block V and 1 in each head.
you may also need the seals that go on top of them as well.
break one off in the block and the only way to withdraw the broken part is by removing the cyl head.
fail to withdraw the broken part and you will post about a high speed overheat due to water passage blockage.

Rodbolt, can I get away with not doing this?
I am running into them being swollen. I don't feel like breaking one off and having to remove the heads to get them out.

dunno
I have seen them break off all by themselves then I have to retrieve the pieces.
its also why if they are not done regularly then leave them alone.

I think I'll leave them alone.

I took one out yesterday. The tab broke off when I pulled on it, then the head was sealed in there pretty good. poked and tapped on it to loosen, then it broke and crumbled when extracting. I then fished out as much as I could, flushed with fresh water while plugging up the water pump inlet tube(I had the LU off) and got a good stream coming out.

I have twins, so I don't feel like doing this 8 times!
I wish I had taken care of this at the 200 hr service.

On to repairing the PTT manual relief and check valves to fix the slow drop overnight.
