Hey everyone. I acquired this boat a few months back and finally have some time to start working on it.
After a little bit of maintenance on the 1998 Evinrude 115 SPL, it fired right up. A little smokey, but I think I mixed the gas with a little bit too much oil when testing it.
There were a couple of soft spots around the drains in the center and right in front of the consoles. I cut some wood out today to see what I am dealing with. I discovered where the foam is hiding since there wasn't any in the middle of the boat. It felt wet so I cut a section out. It is only wet for about the first 1 - 1 1/2 inches. I know it SHOULD be replaced, but I don't believe I will be going through the trouble. It is a dual console boat with very little access to the underneath without taking the cap off, which is more than I want to tackle.
I am just a little confused as to how this boat is actually constructed. From the man other build logs I have looked at, they all seem to look pretty similar underneath the deck. Typically a bunch of foam and some 2x4 stringers either bare or covered in fiberglass. Well, mine has two very small "stringers" in the center covered in fiberglass. By small I mean they are only about 1/2" high. The drains on the deck drain directly on to this area and flows to the hole in the back.
Then there are two very thick stringers on each side with the foam on the outside. This is my first boat, besides a 12' jon boat, so I am not very knowledgable when it comes to their construction. I have attached a couple of images to this post.
Are these thick outer stringers what I should be core sampling?
I will also add that although this boat can technically go 50mph or so, I plan on using it very gently on some Florida rivers. Not high speed on open lakes with waves.
