1997 Yamaha 225 Low Compression

I was wondering if anyone can give me info? I am thinking of buying a 1998 Grady with 2 1997 Yamaha 225's two stroke saltwater series II. I don't have any compression #'s, but I am told one motor tests and runs ok and the other runs, but has low compression on 3 cyl. I am assuming I will have to get a rebuild on the one motor right away. Can anyone give me an opinion on what is wrong and a best and worst case senario to rebuild the motors ? Also, what does everyone think of these particular motors, ie year and model? Thank you, Steve

PS What is a realistic life on these motors if they were reasonably maintained ?

"low compression" is a meaningless term. What is low? At least half of the engines condemned for "low compression" are in good health and only need a good decarb.

Those were good engines just 12 years ago and had a life expectancy of around 3-5,000 hours if well maintained.

I was under the impression, from what I have read, that when compression on 3 cyl is low you can just about throw the motor in the garbage. Your answer has given me some hope! If I did need to do a complete rebuild, what can I expect to pay. Also, if the rebuild is done right, what type of life will I get and will they run as strong?
