Greetings People;
Here's the story, I am "trying" to do a water pump on my 1997 225 Yamaha, according to the service manual it has 6 bolts around the lower unit, when you remove the trim zinc there is another bolt underneath.
All of them are removed... No problem so far, so I was hoping the lower unit would just come out. Nope, wont drop or move at all. I took a 8oz rubber hammer and thought a few love taps around the lower unit would jar it loose. Nope, still attached with NO movement.

Any other ideas on how to get a lower unit that really likes to be attached to the mid section off?

Thanks
Tom

The dowels are bad about sticking and i hve had to kick each side to get them loose but i hate doing this but sometimes i have to. Or bigger hammer just be careful where you hit it.

Re: 1997 Yamaha 225 lower unit stuck

I presume the shift shaft doesnt get loosened like a johnson outboard... (at least me older johnson had to have it loosened)

How much play is ther when the lower unit is free?? (when the motor is down can it move left/right or front/back a little????

Can I put a piece of wood against the transom (parallel to it) and the take another wood block, place one side of the wood against the wood on the transom and the other against the lower unit. I would then slightly lower the outboard to put pressure on the lower unit. Maybe it would then break free?? Or does it only pop down and out.

I thought I read somewhere that others have loosened the motor and tilted it to get the lower unit loose. Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Thanks
Tom

Re: 1997 Yamaha 225 lower unit stuck

depending on the model number you will have either a 2.6L with 7 bolts holding the lower on or a 3.1L with 8 bolts.
if its 225TLRV its a 2.6 if its 225TX or TU its a 3.1.
both were 225 HP but they are designed a bit different.

Re: 1997 Yamaha 225 lower unit stuck

I have a s225turv. There are in all 8 screws. 3 on each side around the lower unit. Then there are basically two, one on the zinc and when the zinc is removed there was a bolt in there that I removed.

Any other screws that I am missing?

Thanks.

Re: 1997 Yamaha 225 lower unit stuck

your missing the one just fwd of the trim tab.
go look.
you will see a hole about 1" fwd of the tab pocket.
use a 14mm socket and remove the 8th bolt.
then start my tab at the blue crab :)
the tab bolt is not counted as a lower unit bolt.
its also a 12mm head not 14.
also you need to double check your manual.
you either have the wrong one or your in the wrong section.
